As Michigan battles the economic crisis with a challenging economy, disparate educational systems and widespread poverty, eating healthfully is a continued challenge for the communities by which obesity hardest hits – African-Americans.

Obesity is a serious health condition and in Michigan adult obesity rates are 41.1 percent for Blacks compared to those Whites which are 29.1 percent. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) defines obese as having a BMI, or body mass index of 30 or above.

About 67% of Michigan adults are obese and those numbers have inspired Governor Rick Snyder to address plans for health and fitness reform across the state. “Every Michigander has a role to play in improving health and wellness,” said Gov. Snyder.

There are various ways to fight and prevent obesity including the adoption of more healthful choices. The consumption of more whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables and exercise all assist in reducing and preventing obesity.

“While medical advances can address many problems, all Michiganders have the power to improve their own health. This is critical because many of the chronic conditions we face, from diabetes to coronary heart disease, are greatly influenced by our lifestyle choices.”
