Heroes of Hope

What is your definition of a hero? Oftentimes today's heroes and icons are regarded as those who are athletes, entertainers, movie stars, the rich and famous.
We get caught up in the hoopla and celebrity culture, that we overlook the ordinary people who do extraordinary things.  The real heroes and icons are teachers, lawyers, doctors, entrepreneurs, and writers who contribute to the lives of others.
In 2011, The Knight Foundation developed a Black Male Engagement project entitled "BME" which supports black men who have a vision to transform their communities.  More than 1,000 Detroit black men submitted their videos online to http://www.bmechallenge.org/ showcasing their heroic efforts in the community.
Just this week, 10 men were chosen to receive the BME Leadership Award and $200,000 will be given to support the vision of the winners, as they transform lives.  These Detroit heroes deserve an applause, for the greater hope and courage that will be birthed into the lives of those they touch.
